In conjunction with the Maroochy Botanic Gardens Sculpture Symposium, the Bellingham Maze gardens will buzz with the sounds of a chain saw with a sculptor in action.

Artist and sculptor Jason Flynn from Totem Art, Maleny will create timber sculptures on site at the Bellingham Maze, one of seven galleries taking part in the sculpture event, every Saturday and Sunday from 10.30am to 2.30pm during the symposium, which began on Saturday September 24.

Maze owner Sophy Wrangell said themes for the timber sculptures will include a two metre tall minotaur.

"The minotaur is the half bull, half man creature from ancient Greek mythology that resided in a labyrinth," Ms Wrangell said. "Jason will also create fairies, gnomes and other creatures each weekend during the symposium."

Mr Flynn, who mainly creates works from weed timbers, said he was looking forward to teasing his subjects from the timber.

"I mainly use weed timbers that re-generate easily and have accessed some camphor laurel stumps to create the sculptures for the Maze," Mr Flynn said.

"Although Sophy and Wayne have requested a minotaur, I will also be producing whatever is in the timber during the three weekends."

Visitors can enjoy coffee and Devonshire teas while watching Jason work.

Bellingham Maze is on the Tanawha-Forest Glen Tourist Drive at Tanawha, two kilometres from the Botanic Gardens.

Other galleries hosting special presentations for the Sculpture Symposium are the Sunshine Coast University Gallery at Sippy Downs, Tiffany Jones Fine Art on Buderim, Tree Frog Gallery at Maleny, Art on Cairncross at Maleny, the Caloundra Regional Gallery, the Cooloola Shire Public Library and Gallery La Tourelle at Tanawha.
